In 2010 Gearóid Roughan wrote his thesis, Improving Reading Achievement and Attitudes through Accelerated Reader: A Teacher’s Perspective, on Renaissance Accelerated Reader. The results of this thesis were very positive and it was such a success that it triggered interest in Accelerated Reader in County Clare. Scoil Chrióst Rí, with Pat Hanrahan as its Principal at the time, became the first school to implement both Accelerated Reader and Renaissance Star Reading.
Since then, Pat has become Director of Clare Education Centre and has spread the word about both programmes to other schools in County Clare, and now over 50 schools have come on board. Renaissance visited five of those schools in County Clare to hear their stories of their experiences with Accelerated Reader and to witness the success they’ve had.
We filmed various testimonials from staff and students from the following schools: Clohanes National School, Clarecastle National School, Scoil Chrióst Rí, Ennis National School and Coláiste Muire.
“The response in County Clare to AR has been fantastically positive over the past six years.”
Pat Hanrahan, Clare Education Centre Director
Pat Hanrahan is currently Director of Clare Education Centre, having spent most of his teaching career in two local schools – Clohanes N.S. and Scoil Chriost Rí, Ennis. He has also worked in school leadership and spent three years as Assistant National Co-ordinator within the Department of Education’s leadership programme.
Since 2011 he has spearheaded the very successful “Clare Accelerated Reader Group of Schools”. In excess of 50 local schools work in conjunction with Clare Education Centre and Renaissance to make the Renaissance Accelerated Reader programme available to schools within the Clare area. It has made a significant improvement in the standard of reading in participating schools.
